His All Holiness Bartholomew I, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and Ecumenical Patriarch, received the Scientific Consensus Statement from one of its co-authors, Prof. Mikael Fortelius of the University of Helskinki. Included was a supporting letter from California's Governor Jerry Brown. Patriarch Bartholomew expressed hope of further contact with scientists who endorsed the statement and politicians who are using it.

His All Holiness Bartholomew I is arguably the most prominent leader in the Orthodox Christian church. Dubbed "The Green Patriarch" by US Vice President Al Gore, he is well known for his engagement on environmental issues. The meeting took place September 12, 2013, after the Patriarch celebrated the liturgy in the Uspenski Cathedral in Helsinki.
